Long Time Gone

Orange Tulips

Orange Tulips - D700, Lensbaby Composer, Sweet 35

It’s been some time since I have posted anything to the blog…also been some time since I’ve had any free time, energy or desire to do any photography. We have had a serious medical issue at home that has taken all my energy to manage. At the present time things have settled down and we are trying to get some kind of life back…soooo I have managed to do some new images.

My wife has been getting flowers from the family every week for a while now and that makes for some instant subject matter. The orange tulips were shot back-lit in the window using the new Sweet 35 optic from Lensbaby. Much easier to adjust the f-stop quickly as needed.

The pink tulips were shot using the same setup and processed with some texture overlays using Flypaper Textures. I’ve been wanting to play with these for a while and now I finally got to have some fun. This is my first experiment with the Flypaper Textures and I’m sure it won’t be my last.

Autumn Textures and Reflections

Leaf on Metal

Leaf on Metal - G10, Macro Mode

Took a walk with my G10 after our Friday tennis get together, yes it was a little chilly and windy for tennis but we are a hardy bunch. Found this leaf laying on an old rusted piece of metal and was drawn to the textures and colors. This next one was in the creek along the bank, a bunch of leaves and twigs were captured in nook in the bank. Again it was the texture that attracted me along with the color.

Processed both of these using Nik Color Efex Pro 3.0 with the Tonal Contrast filter and finished off in CS5 with a Selective Color adjustment layer. This last one is another creek-side reflection with some mirroring applied. Something about the color pallet that me smile…click on any of the images to view larger.

Autumn Rain

Raindrops on Yellow Leaf

Raindrops on Yellow Leaf - G10, Macro Mode

Played some tennis in a bit of a light rain off and on…couldn’t help but notice all the colors saturated by the rain. After tennis I got my G10 out of the car, it’s all I had with me, really. Click on the Continue Reading link to see the rest of the post… Continue reading

Apples, Trains & Raindrops

Red Trains

Red Trains - D700, 70-200mm

I know, the title says Apples, Trains & Raindrops and I start the post with a train photo…just wanted to see if you were paying attention. You will get your apples later, really. The first “Red Trains” image is a combination of four images, as the train was coming down the track I thought it would make a more interesting image if I showed a sequence as the train approached. Great Mantis Shoot No.2

Alien Mantis

Alien Mantis - D700, 70-200 w/extention tube

For the last couple of years we have almost always had a mantis or two in the garden. They lay an egg case in the same shrub (scotch broom) every year. This year I got to see the female lay the egg case. I was on my way out the door to get a haircut and took a quick for the mantis…WOW…there she was in the scotch broom laying the egg case.

Backlit Butterfly

Backlit Butterfly

Backlit Butterfly - D700, 70-200 w/extention tube

As the sun was going down last night I spotted this nicely backlit yellow sulfur, turns out getting the image I saw was going to take some time. Must have spent an hour or so chasing this one little butterfly all around the bush of flowers. Maybe my big white shirt wasn’t helping…

Chasing Butterflys

Butterfly Closeup

Butterfly Closeup - D700, 70-200mm w/500D

The butterfly’s were quite active in the garden this morning so I got out my 70-200mm and added a Canon 500D close up lens to get me a little closer. Here’s another shot of one coming in for a landing…click image to view a little larger.

Pink & Green

Pink & Green - D700, 85mm PC

I haven’t posted too many images lately, been working on some other projects…so every so often I get an call or email from my friend Tony wondering if I’m still alive or what? Nice to know I’m missed…so here are a few images from the garden recently. Nothing to set the world on fire but at least it show’s I’m still alive and taking photos.

Garden Flower & Texture

Flower and Texture

Flower and Texture - D700, 85mm PC

The sun was going down on the garden dabbing highlights here, there and everywhere. I was doing some experimenting with multiple exposures in camera. This is a two shot multiple, one in focus and one out. In CS5 I added some Nik Color Efex Pro, Color Contrast filter and also some texture using  the Totally Rad, Dirty Pictures plug-in. The bright yellows in the background are a large bank of yellow day lilies backlit by the sun.
